Investigating fluid flow through microchannel using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

Streszczenie projektu

The motivation behind this work has its origin in the boundary layer control for aeronautics and turbomachinery. Boundary layer can be modified by perforated plates with micro holes of specific size, which passively control the flow configuration as well as smearing out unfavorable transonic shock waves.

Additional application was to find a more efficient cooling system for the first stages of gas turbine blades. In such configuration, the coolant is supplied by set of small holes where the cooling process needs to be adopted on the walls of a high temperature systems.

Our scope is to model and simulate such system with one hole, using SPH as a Lagrangian method, to investigate the effect of Viscous forces, compressibility, temperature, on the flow behavior. Results shall then be compared with experimental and computational results using another grid-based approach.

Our thesis is undergoing under the Department of Applied Physics & Mathematics, under the MathMods Erasmus Mundus program. The project is an extension to previous work done in the Polish Academy of Science, Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery. The model shall be simulated using LAMMPS software, which is known for the Micro and Mesoscopic particle simulations.
